November 6th 2011: A Day in Pompeii at the Museum of Science, Boston

I resumed sightseeing in Medfield this morning. It was pretty frosty, and there was a layer of dew-ice on all the grass patches.
My first place of visit of the day was a hike at Rocky Woods. The entrance can be found at around 50 Hartford Street. The route I took is highlighted in pink below.

From the parking area, I first took the left side of the Loop Trail to reach the Echo Pond Trail at checkpoint 1, which follows along Echo Pond, until a bridge which crosses the pond to the other side, which I took and took pictures of the pond from.

From here, I headed to the junction with the Harwood Notch Trail at checkpoint 6, which looked like a 3-way fork, the target trail being the central path, onto which I turned to continue heading in a northerly direction. I veered onto a side trail to get to the first viewpoint, but there were to many trees to see anything here. I then continued back to the main trail, all the way till it becomes the Ridge Trail at checkpoint 7, and on to the next viewpoint off the trail again. Once again, there was nothing much to see here. I carried on along the Ridge Trail until checkpoint 4, where I chose to go onto the Tower Trail to find the Cedar Hill Summit, which was again a side trail off to the left of the main path I was taking. Finally though, on a rocky outcrop near the top, there were some good views of the surroundings.

From here, I continued up the hill, where I saw the foundations of the tower that gave the trail its name. According to a caretaker who I asked later, the tower had been removed because it was getting to old to be safe, that visitors could no longer climb it from the 1970s onwards, and that young drunk teenagers had tried to climb it in the past, leading to its removal due to potential liability issues.

The point where I got back to the Tower Trail was where I got lost, because I could not find the entrance to the Cedar Hill Trail. I finally managed to do so after walking back and forth along the Tower Trail, and carried on my merry way to the Noanet Trail and reaching checkpoint 3 at the Chickering Pond. Here, there is a nice recreational area with great views of the pond.

Moving on as the Chickering Pond Trail became the Loop Trail again as I headed back to my car, I happened to see a young woodpecker on a tree. Unfortunately , I could only take one blurred picture of it before it flew away. I have been trying a for a long time to capture a woodpecker, and this is the best I have gotten to date after all my travels.

Finally back at my car, I decided to head to the town of Westwood for my Sunday brunch, as I had another meetup event at the Museum of Science in Boston that afternoon. The brunch place I chose was Vello's, where I had the Pastrami Hash with scrambled eggs, which was good, and hot tea in an interesting mug.

As I headed to Boston after my nice brunch, I spotted the Westwood Town Hall, and decided to take a picture of it so that I would not have to come back here again next time when I start sightseeing in the 6th Circle.

Finally, it was on the the Museum of Science in Boston for the first time. I decided to park my car on the roof when I finally found the place along Monsignor O'Brien Highway between Charlestown Avenue and Nashua Street. The views of downtown Boston from here were pretty awesome.

Before meeting up with the group, I walked around a little to take a few pictures.

I managed to find the organizers by chance, seeing a group of people starting to form around him, and at the correct time of entry, we started our town of the A Day in Pompeii exhibtion. Some interesting things I saw were a petrified loaf of bread, a gladiator helmet, ancient graffiti and several death casts of various people and animals that were buried by the volcanic eruption that occurred and destroyed Pompeii.

After exiting the exhibition, I realized that I had lost the rest of my group. I could not find any of them for the rest of the day. Anyway, I decided to check out the rest of the museum. There were exhibtions about all kinds of things, ranging from all sorts of animals, dinosaurs, rocks, all types of technology, including a lightning room, and even an exhibition about the wonders of math, and its applications in today's world, including the one-sided, one-edged moebius strip, which unfortunately I did not get a good picture of.

Finally leaving the museum at around 3 pm, I decided to take some pictures of the surroundings.

With that, I decided to head back to the town of Dover for more sightseeing. Along the way back, while in Brookline, I spotted the Brookline Fire Station #1 building at 140 Washington Street and decided to capture it while waiting for the light to turn.
Unfortunately, I ran out of gas along the way and had to fill up in Wellesley, so by the time I got to Dover, I could only manage to take 2 dark pictures of the Dover-Sherborn Middle and High Schools.

With that, I decided to call it a day.
