August 6th 2016: Cape Elizabeth, South Portland and Portland, Maine

We set off for our trip to Maine today, heading first to Cape Elizabeth, passing by the Whittier Bridge in Amesbury MA

and the Piscataqua River Bridge in Portsmouth NH.
We stopped for lunch at the Kettle Cove Creamery and Cafe in Cape Elizabeth,
bringing our Wildflower Lemonade (house brewed wildflower tea and lemonade),
Lobster Roll
and Crescent Caprese Panini (heirloom tomatoes, olive tapenade, pesto, mozzarella)
to Kettle Cove State Park, which was pretty windy today.

One can also get to Crescent Beach State Park from here,

which actually needs a fee for parking if you park near there, even though it is free here.

From here, we went to check out the two lighthouses in town that are on private property,
Cape Elizabeth Light
Cape Elizabeth West Light
then headed to Fort Williams Park,

where one can see the ruins of the Goddard Mansion
and Ram Island Ledge Light,

and where Portland Head Light is located as well.
From here, it was on to Portland, passing by a few places in the downtown area
State Theatre
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Deering Oaks Park

First Parish Unitarian Universalist
Monument Square
North School Apartments
Portland Observatory
City Hall
511 Congress Street

on the way to the Eastern Promenade,

a huge park by the sea with the East End Beach,
the much smaller and rockier Northwest Shore Beach,
and the Fort Allen Park,

from which one can see Fort Gorges,

Bug Light

and Spring Point Ledge Light.

From here, we went for a little stroll around Back Cove, where one can see the Portland skyline.
At this point, we were hungry, and decided to head into South Portland for dinner at David's 388 Restaurant, one of the top restaurants in town.
We got the Southwest Salmon Cake (black beans, grilled corn, pickled red onion, cilantro, lime yogurt)
and the Hake and Lobster (herbed hake, sweet corn cream, garlic mashed potato, asparagus).
Both were really delicious, the salmon with the cajun flavors and the fresh flaky hake in the sweet corn sauce. To top it off, the meal wasn't that expensive either, as I would have thought for a top restaurant.

We still had some time before the mall closed, so we went to check out the Maine Mall in town.
With that, we called it a day for sightseeing in Cape Elizabeth, South Portland and Portland.
