January 27th 2012: Dinner at the Medieval Manor Theatre Restaurant, Boston

Tonight after work, I decided to head into Boston for a dinner experience with my friend quite like that at Once in Valhalla last week, a show dinner at the Medieval Manor Theatre Restaurant for a price of $40 a person. This is a six course dinner, eaten totally without utensils, using only our hands.

After parking behind the building for $10, we proceeded to register at the main stage before heading to the bar to wait for our names to be called back in.We got a free Medieval Manor glass and raffle tickets as result, although I was thinking it would be one per person, but oh well, I gave it to my friend for a souvenir.

We were finally called in to our tables by one of the performers, Suds, who was a pretty funny guy all night long. The first two courses came fast enough, the first a pizza of sorts, stuffed with cheese, and a bowl of mussels with olive oil and cheese on the side. These were easy enough to eat without fingers, and we gobbled them down while the show started.

One of the interesting things about this show was that it involved a lot of customer participation, with everyone having a special event coming to this show being made fun of, and there was even a peon for the night who was ridiculed for the whole night. He served as a hand rest for the king while people had to go on stage to ask for the king's permission to leave the room.
Our next course was called Faux Dragon Soup, being a tomato based soup, and was served by Suds

While we were having food, the performers would have various skits performed, with the majority being bawdy songs, and there was a section with bawdy jokes made by my favorite character, Squiggee. Other performances included guitar solos by the sole guitarist present.

Our courses included beef ribs, a bowl of salad which we felt weird eating with our hands, picking out individual lettuce leaves from the bowl, and half a roasted chicken, half of which we could not even finish at all. It was good and tender though, and of course I had all the skin.

The performance finally ended a few hours, with us having our share of laughs all night. We did not win anything in the raffle however, which was a voucher to come back for another performance for free. Oh well. I think this would be a great place to bring a group of friends to.

January 26th 2012: Dinner at Evo, Worcester

Tonight after work, I went to Evo in Worcester for dinner. This place is a typical burger place which also caters to the needs of vegans and gluten allergic people. It had really nice decor for a burger place, I must say.

I decided to go for the Phat Albert with The Indian Double Dare Topping, having a French Onion Soup as my starter. I went with the Phat Albert Patty because unlike normal patties, it is stuffed with American and cheddar cheese and baked to seal in the flavors, and I went with the Indian Double dare topping because it is a spicy sour cream sauce with ghost chilli, the spiciest pepper in the world.

Thankfully, the waitress knowingly put the sauce on the side, because just one dip of it and I was rushing to get water down my throat to quell the fire there. I decided not to touch it any more for the rest of my meal, but thankfully the patty was so tasty that it made the burger delicious even though there wasn't any other sauce around.

With that, I have found another nice burger place in Worcester.

January 24th 2012: Dinner at Yoong Tong Thai, Northborough

Tonight after work, I headed to Yoong Tong Thai in Northborough on 278 Main Street for dinner.
This place is close to the town border with Marlborough, a stand alone restaurant with decent decor inside.
I decided to get a soup, the Tom Kha Gai, and a duck dish with a side of sticky rice, the Yoong Tong Duckling, which was deep roasted and crispy all over. The soup had just the right degree of sour sweetness, while the sweet sauce accompanying the duck just added to the tastiness of the crispy meat and skin.

January 23rd 2012: CNY Dinner at My Thai Vegan Cafe, Boston

Today is the Chinese New Year, and I decided to have a sort of celebration by going to Boston for a meetup dinner at My Thai Vegan Cafe at 3 Beach Road in Boston.

The entrance to the place is right next to Pho Pasteur, and it did not look very fancy at first, much less like it would be able to fit the 14 people that were supposed to attend this meetup event. As it turned out, the restaurant is actually on the second floor, and when I finally climbed up the dirty flight of wooden stairs, I entered into a pretty large and nicely decorated area. It was easy to find the meetup group as it was the only big group of tables in the place.

We waited a few moments for people to come and when the attendance reached 9, we decided to order anyway. Four of us decided to share our dishes, and I got the Temple Soup on the side for myself.
This soup has sweet potato, butter squash, coconut milk and ground peanuts. I had thought it would be salty like the other soups, but it turned out to be sweet, like a dessert soup. It was really good though. Between the four of us, we shared 4 dishes, although I forgot to take a picture of my own dish, the Choo Chee Fisherman, consisting of veggie fish, scallops squid and clams, mixed with Kaffir lime leaves, onions, hot red peppers and sweet basil stir fried in a red Choo Chee curry sauce. The other dishes were the Yum Nua, a salad with veggie beef, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, scallions, chili garlic and lime juice on crisp lettuce, the Penang Curry with a half veggie chicken, a thick spicy red curry with coconut milk, bamboo shoots, baby corn, string beans, red peppers, onions, zucchini, Kaffir lime leaves and sweet basil, and lastly the Pad See Ew Plus, a plate of stir fried wide rice noodles with Chinese Broccoli and a mix of veggie beef, chicken, tofu and gluten.

All the dishes were really good. What amazed me was how they were able to make the veggie chicken taste like chicken and even have similar texture, and the same for my fish and the squid as well.

After dinner, we stayed awhile to chat, talking about a range of topics like allergies, and strict Asian mothers. Overall, I had a great time here,  and won't mind coming here again.

January 21st 2012: Once in Valhalla

Tonight, I headed to Somerville for a food festival, "Once in Valhalla", held at the Center for the Arts at the Armory. It had snowed heavily all day, but as I had failed to check the weather for today before purchasing my $76 ticket, I had to drive through the snow to get there. Thankfully, there was ample parking behind the place, so I did not have to parallel park along the snow covered streets. The place itself looks really nice, like a quaint little castle.

After registering, I got a golden ribbon to wear around my wrist. On reflection, I guess it was to indicate that I ate meat. I was early, so we had to wait in the cafe there until the event was officially open at 7 pm. People all around me were dressed in Nordic garb, wearing various sorts of Viking Helmets. I was feeling a little out of place, being one of the very few Asians there.

When we finally got inside, I saw that the hall was decorated like a huge banquet area, shown below. Thankfully, I was one of the early birds, so I was able to  choose a good seat at the center. I think I sat in green region instead of the yellow, though, although I could not tell from the lighting, but apparently it was not that important in the end.
Anyway, our first dish, the Smorgasbord, was already on the table. It consisted of Liverwurst, Charred Veal Liver, Fresh Maine Butter, Elderberry Cured Mackerel, Fermented Black Radishes, Pickled Fiddleheads, Brined Watermelon Radishes, with Clear Flour Volkenbrot on the side for the bread. Of everything here, I found everything interesting, but only liked the mackerel and liver meat.

While eating, I observed that there were people lining up on the sides of the room. I knew that one line was for drinks, but there was another crowd surrounding a few Viking garbed people. When I went to see what was going on, I saw that it was where the Island Creek Oysters were being shucked by the Vikings for us to eat. The Oysters themselves were really salty, probably due to the seawater they had inside, and when I tried the Green Apple Minionette, it did not change the flavor at all, mainly because other people before me had already dipped their oysters and poured the saltiness into the bowls. That did not stop me from eating a couple though.

The next course came on a small wooden plate, served by female Valkyries, a block of Robinson Family cheese set atop a rectangular piece of Four Star Rye Hardtack. Neither suited my fancy though.

Using the same plate, the Valkyries then came by after a while to pour Parsnip Bisque from jugs they carried. The soup was decent, but somehow I do not like sweet soups.
While waiting between courses, some of the Vikings would come up onto the stage in front to tell us a little about Nordic culture and gods, playing musical instruments and dancing, and even taught us to sing a Nordic drinking song.

The next course was the Fired Roasted Stillman Leg of Lamb, Red Fire Beets and Sophia's Yogurt. It was served on a large plate to be shared by the people sitting in its vicinity. The meat was really tender, being quite rare, and I could not help wondering how others who dares not eat raw meat would survive the night. The meat was delicious though.
Before we were done, the next course arrived, being the Cider Maple Glazed Vermont Ham and Cheesy Onion Oat Porridge.
The people at the table were cringing at the thought of the oat porridge, but as it turned out, it was actually really good. The ham was really delicious too, especially the pieces with fat on them. Unhealthy, but good.

The next course had already been sampled by others before it came to me, so forgive the lack of aesthetics in the pictures of the Yellow Eye Beans and Wheatberry Pilaf, and Juniper Honey Roasted Roots, which came in separate bowls. This dish was okay I guess, but definitely not my favorite for the night.

The next round was fish, being Green River Ambrosia Mead Poached New Deal Pollock with Butter Sauce, and Chiogga Beets with Thyme. By now, we were getting a little tired of the food, but the fish was fresh and moist though.

The last main course of the night was the best. It was Slumbrew Porter Square Porter Braised Vermont Beef Cheeks Stew, with Rather Crafty Oatcakes. The stew was really fantastic, with the cheek meat being so tender, but even more popular were the oatcakes, which were basically thin, sweet cookies, with people constantly asking for more.

And of course, who can go without dessert, being a cup of Sophia's yogurt, Honey and Blood of the Gods (Raspberry sauce). The yogurt was a little too sour for my liking, though.
With that, I was finally done for the night at around 10.30pm. That was a really long dinner.

January 20th 2012: Dinner at British Beer Company, Framingham

Tonight, my friend asked me out for dinner at the British Beer Company in Framingham, so I gladly went to try out a new restaurant in the area.

I decided to go with the Chicken and Leek Pasty Pie, trying the Stout Onion Soup first, which was pretty good. The pie itself was ok, being served with mashed potatoes and chicken gravy, but I could not finish the dish, probably due to the leek which I don't like very much. My friend chose the Meatloaf Maximus, which was okay as well.

For dessert, my friend chose the key lime pie, which was rather good.  I decided to have a little drink tonight, since my friend wanted to go dancing at Samba Steak and Sushi House later tonight, so I got a fruity drink, the Mahoney Twist, which was really good actually.
With that we headed to Samba Steak and Sushi House. I have been here to try the sushi before, but I did not know that they held dance parties here too. There was no entrance fee, but I have to say the dance floor was actually between the tables in front of the bar, which wasn't really a very big area. The karaoke session was on tonight from 9 to 10.30pm, and then the dance party started. To be honest, I haven't partied for a while, but I still had a good time with my friends here, dancing nearly till closing time after midnight before finally heading home.

January 19th 2012: Dinner at Major League Roast Beef and Wings, Auburn

I decided to head to Auburn for dinner tonight, trying out Major League Roast Beef and Wings. Having checked out the menu beforehand, I chose the Route 20 specialty sub combo, 6 wings (Ace of Staff) with Honey Garlic sauce, and fries, onion rings and coleslaw on the side.

This place looks more like a fast food outlet than a restaurant, and you have to order your food at the counter and pay upfront as well. The food came really fast as well.
The wings  and fries were pretty good, although I regretted getting the sub a little, partly because it wasn't that great, and it ended up being too much for me. At least the meal was filling and not expensive at all.
