April 30th 2015: Dinner at Markoh's on Main, Ayer

I had to go collect the jacket I left behind in Groton yesterday, so I decided to have dinner nearby at Markoh's on Main in Ayer. This place is affiliated with Lucia's Tavola, which I went to a few weeks back. Not as nice looking though, and nothing much interesting on the menu either.

With my deal, I got the Tips and Scallops (Seared Sea Scallops and grilled tenderloin tips, garlic mashed potatoes and Mushroom brandy demi glacé) for my main course,

and the Cenci (Fried Italian sweet pastry drizzled with local honey and dusted with powdered sugar) For dessert.
The beef and scallops were just so-so. The dessert itself was much larger than I thought it would be, and I only ate less than half of it before I decided I had enough. Not bad though, crispy with honey sweetness.

Overall, Lucia's is still much better.

April 29th 2015: Second Night in a Row at Amorino, Boston

Today after work, I was to have hotpot at my friend's place. Before that, as I had a groupon to use at The Tavern in Groton, located at the Groton Country Club, I headed there first.

I got the Cheese Fries
and the Beer Battered Coconut Shrimp with Sweet Marmalade.
Not bad, but nothing special, especially in a pretty run down place. I was expecting more from a country club. It was only later that I realized that I had left my jacket there. Guess I have to go back there tomorrow.

After hotpot, I took my friend to Amorino, which I was at just yesterday.
This time, she got the Grande Cone with as many sorbet flavors as possible to make a flower,
while I got the Waffle with Tiramisu and Speculos Biscuit Gelato on top.
The cone was crispy and fresh, while the waffle was crispy and thin, just the way I like it. Definitely the best ice cream experience to date.

We also got a box of macarons, but as they contained gelato, we had to get it home within 30 minutes to the freezer. Hope they didn't melt.

April 28th 2015: Meals in Boston

After work today, I headed into Boston for my meals today. I started off at Roost Bistro, a small but decently decorated restaurant with an upscale feel,

getting the Potato Leek Soup

and the Long Island Duck Breast (sweet potato puree, sautéed spinach, black cherry gastric).

Next, I headed nearby to Amorino, the new ice cream place in town, for some dessert.
They have an interesting way of putting 3 scoops of different ice cream into a tiny cup, so I had to try it, getting the Indian Alphonso Mango, Raspberry Heritage and Blood Orange sorbet flavors. absolutely delicious.

My final destination for the night was at Fogo de Chao for Brazilian buffet, where I had a meetup event to attend. Yes, you must be thinking, after everything I had before? Really nice decor to start with.
After we decided everyone had arrived, it was time to start, with cheese bread starters,

and then flipping over our disks to signal we wanted meat.
In my opinion, the salad bar was a little lacking in authentic Brazilian food, especially salpicao. How could you not have that at a Brazilian place, I don't know. The fruit, especially the papaya, was really delicious though. It was also a bit lacking in terms of meat varieties as well.
They did put sides of polenta fries and plantains on the table though.
According to my friend though, I could have gotten more meat by requesting from the menu, and that I should give it a second opinion next time. I guess I will, and she eagerly wants to try Amorino as well. I definitely want to try the macarons next time.

April 27th 2015: Dinner at Cafe Polonia, Boston

Today after work, I had a meetup dinner at Cafe Polonia in Boston for some Polish food.

Before that, I went to get some ice cream from Savin Scoop nearby, getting the Graham Central Station Ice Cream. Pretty good.
At the restaurant itself, I decided to get the Sour Pickle Soup
and the Polish Plate (Hunter's stew, stuffed cabbage, three pierogies, and grilled Polish sausage kielbasa).
Everything was sour and not too much to my liking. The only thing I really liked was the kielbasa.

Even the Chocolate Babka (Traditional babka cake filled with warm chocolate, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream) we got
was just a molten lava cake, although it was pretty good, as was the Apple Crisp (baked warm and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream) my friend got, which was actually a lot better.

Overall, not a place I would recommend.

April 26th 2015: Japan Festival 2015 in Boston

My friend and I started out today at the Japan Festival, held on the Boston Common in Boston.

There were already lots of people when we arrived. Pictures I took here follow.
Of course we could not leave without trying the food here, so we lined up for the Beard Papa's cream puffs, which were made fresh on the spot.

Apparently it will be opening in Chinatown in the near future. Can't wait for it.
As the lines for ramen were really long, we decided to go for the shortest line, which allowed us to buy all 3 ramen bowls being sold at the same time, namely the Maze Soba from Yume Wo Katare,
the Shio Ramen from Nico
and the Tonkotsu Ramen from Butanchu.
Of all of them, I liked the Tonkotsu the best, although my friend complained about the fat in the broth. Delicious.

We went to the Boston Public Garden a bit to check out the flowers blooming for a little,
then headed to Nahant for the rest of the day, having dinner at Tides Restaurant and Pub there.

We got the Boston Clam Chowder,

the Fried Clam Appetizer (lightly battered tender clams deep fried perfectly, served with homemade tartar sauce)

and the Heart Attack Burger (topped with horseradish mustard sauce, salami, crispy bacon, cheese and beer battered onion ring).
The soup tasted a little sour, the clams were not fresh, and the burger was really bland. Definitely not coming back here again, or so I thought.

We went to the Showcase Cinemas de Lux Revere to watch "The Age of Adaline", which wasn't too bad a movie, but I realized I had left my jacket back at the restaurant, and thankfully they were still not closed even after we got back from watching the movie. The night views of Nahant Beach from here were pretty serene though.

A somewhat perfect ending to a wonderful Sunday. Back to work tomorrow though.

April 25th 2015: Hiking and Mini-Golf in Northeastern Massachusetts

I started out early this morning with a Hike at the Ward Reservation in Andover. The path I took here is shown below in pink.

From the parking lot, I first headed the Bog Trail,
going to the end to view the Pine Hole Pond.
From here, I went to the red trail and headed over an open field, where there were pretty good views of the Boston skyline.
There was more to be had at the top of Holt Hill though.
From here, I walked all the way to the Beaver Wetland Overlook, where the views of the marsh were pretty decent as well.
After getting back to my car, it was on to the next hike at Doyle Link. The path I took here from the end of Candlewood Drive is shown below in pink.
Nothing much to see here though.
Next, I did a hike at Haggett's Pond. The path I took here from 274 High Plain Road is shown below in pink.
The views of the pond on this beautiful day were magnificent.
My last hike in Andover was a continuation of my exploration of the Deer Jump Reservation from before. This time, the path I took here is shown below in pink.
The views on my first leg from Fossen's Way to Nollett Drive were just so-so.

Only the views from the southern trail on the power lines on the top of the hill were awesome.
After another pretty good hike, I decided to head into Lawrence for breakfast at Carleen's Coffee Shop. A pretty busy place, I decided to go with the Hot Chocolate
and the Southern Benny (two extra large eggs poached with sausage patties on grilled biscuits covered with a Southern Style Gravy).
Not bad, but nothing amazing.

From here, I visited other places in town,
Costello Park
Dr. Nina Scarito Park
Immigrant Place Park
Iglesia Bautista Biblica,
3 Green Street
Engine 7, 290 Park Street
Loft Five50
Manchester Street Park
St. Mary's Cemetery
United Riverside Congregational Church
Iglesia Evangelica de Lawrence,
61 Warren Street
St. Augustine Chapel, 128 Ames Street
Old Engine 8,
298 Ames Street
I was starting to get disappointed with the crappy city of Lawrence until I got to my last destination in town, Reservoir Park,
where the views from the park were amazing,

along with its tower on Tower Hill.

Finally done with the city of Lawrence, it was on to North Andover,
North Andover Housing Authority
where I visited the Museum of Printing, one of only 3 left in the country. Pictures I took here of the old printing presses, typewriters, Chinese printers and even MacIntosh computers follow.
After leaving the museum, I headed to Jimmy's Famous Pizza, a pizza takeout place with its own mini-golf area.
I got the Mac Daddy Pizza (Ground hamburger, mozzarella cheese, topped with lettuce, onions, pickles and special sauce)
and the BBQ Chicken Bacon Ranch Calzone.
The pizza would have been great, tasting like a Big Mac, if not for the raw onions in it. The calzone was pretty good though.

Next, I went on a hike at the Shawsheen River Trail. The path I eventually took to explore the area from Hawthorne Place is shown below in pink.
Initially, I tried to enter the area from Greene Street, but could not find the trail. I gave up and went to the Hawthorne Place side, and was luckier this time. It was only when I came out on the Greene Street side that I realized I had been looking in the wrong place for the trail. Nothing much to see here though.
My next hike was at Osgood Hill. The path I took here is shown below in pink.
From the parking area on Osgood Street near Prescott Street, I made my way to the shore of Lake Cochichewick for views of it.
From here, I decided to head to the top of Osgood Hill. While heading down the Osgood Hill Trail, I saw people hiking uphill from me on the Half Mile Hill Trail, so I decided to cut through the forest to get to the trail so that I did not need to go the long way around. At the open field area at the base of the hill that I came to, there were really good views southeastwards.

From here, I headed to the Stevens Estate
on the way back to my car.

From here, I headed to my next hike at Claypit Hill, going up the hill at 693 Johnson Street. There was nothing much to see here except for the radio tower.
My final hike of the day was at Boston Hill. The path I took to get to the 2 vista points in this area is shown below in pink.
Pictures of the various views from this area follow. Pretty nice hike.
Done with hiking for the day, I went to meet my friend for a session of mini-golf at Monster Mini-Golf. It was a close game, but I somehow managed to win. She still disputes the result. Pictures I took of the course, which was glow in the dark, follow.
After our golf session, we headed to Peabody for dinner at Joe's American Bar and Grill, located within the Northshore Mall. Pretty nice decor, to say the least.
For food, my friend got the Onion Soup Gratinee (swiss, mozzarella, croutons)
and the Jumbo Shrimp and Chicken Jambalaya (jumbo shrimp, pulled roasted chicken, andoullie sausage, rice, trinity vegetables, spicy Creole sauce),
while I got the Joe's Signature Burger (barbecue sauce, crispy pork belly, white cheddar, maple Cajun bacon jam, house-cured pickles, arugula).
Everything was delicious, especially the burger. Definitely one of the better ones I have had to date. For dessert, my friend just decided to get a drink, namely the Coconut Brownie (hot chocolate, Captain Morgan spiced rum, Malibu coconut rum).
Way too bitter for my liking.

By the time we were done, the mall was already closed, and we chose to call it a day. Still glad I won at mini-golf today. She wants a rematch some day soon.
