When I arrived in the area, I still had a little time to spare, so I decided to get a quick bite at New York Fried Chicken and Pizza, a small takout place at 67 Washington Street nearby, getting the Snack Box, consisting of 2 pieces of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and a piece of bread. Average stuff, though I still think KFC is better.
It was about time to go for the meetup event after I was done with my chicken, and I headed into the restaurant, which was okay in terms of decor.
Everyone was already present at the table when I arrived, so we got down to ordering. On top of a pitcher of red Sangria,
we ordered pretty much the entire tapas menu, getting the Gambas al ajillo (Sizzling shrimp in garlic with a hot chili pepper),
the Croquetas de pollo (Chicken croquettes served with Romesco sauce (contains almonds)),
the Pimientos del piquillo rellenos de mariscos (Spanish piquillo peppers stuffed with seafood paella in a saffron lobster sauce),
the Brie a la plancha (Grilled imported Brie cheese with a homemade savory apple and raisin chutney served with a grilled baguette),
the Confít de pato (Fall off the bone succulent roasted duck leg served over braised red cabbage and apples),
Tarta gratinada de puerros (Leek quiche baked with smoked cheddar and manchego cheese),
the Mejillones (Fresh mussels steamed in a white wine tomato broth with garlic and onion, served with grilled herbed crostinis),
the Costilla de ternera (Slow oven braised beef short rib served on the bone over scallion mashed potato with root vegetables in jus),
the Fideos con mariscos (Catalan style vermicelli pasta with littleneck clam, shrimp, calamari and mussels baked in a garlic lobster broth),
the Patatas bravas (Fried cubed potatoes in a piquant tomato sauce and garlic aioli),
the Pulpo a la Gallega (Octopus served on olive oil sautéed potatoes with smoked Spanish paprika)
and the Salmón ahumado (Smoked salmon served on a potato pancake with red onion, capers and dill crème fraîche). I apologize for the poor quality of the pictures I managed to take though.
The shrimp was pretty good, while the peppers weren't to my liking. The croquettes were a little bland, but the brie cheese had excellent taste and texture, going well with the chutney. The duck was okay, being a little tasteless though better with the red cabbage. The quiche wasn't too bad, while the sauce for the mussels was so good that we kept dipping our bread into the sauce. The short rib was pretty tender, and I actually liked the pasta, though my friends did not take to it as much. The potatoes were the most ridiculous looking tapas plate, coming from a seemingly upper scale restaurant, but looking like it came right out of a sports bar. The sauces it came with were pretty good though. The octopus was a little salty, though the potatoes were a nice touch. The smoked salmon tasted as expected, although the potato pancake below was bland.
Overall, I think this place is not as good as the many other tapas places I have tried in the Boston area.
