May 17th 2014: Celebrating My Friend's Birthday at Bronwyn, Somerville

I headed into Cambridge with my friends to do some food truck stuff for the Bike Tours of Cambridge today, held outside the Cambridge Public Library. It turned out to be a beautiful day today, even though weather forecasts had consistently reported heavy rain this morning. As a result, many people choose to stay home, and we did not have much business. I did take the opportunity to explore the library for a bit, which was pretty nice inside.
In the evening, we had another event to go to, the Porchfest in Somerville, where bands performed on the front porches of people's houses all over town. Our food truck was located at one of those spots, and did pretty good business there.
After finally being done with food truck business for the day, we headed to Bronwyn to celebrate my friend's birthday. Just for the occasion, I got a drink, Vier (Citadelle Gin, Mathilde Poire, Bärenjäger, Lemon, Pear Cider), which was actually pretty good for a non drinker like me.

For food, we started off with the Brot Basket (oat-honey challah, seeded roggenbrot, buckwheat-currant roll, lemon-caraway butter), the butter being really tasty,

We let the birthday boy cut up and distribute the Leberwurst (cold pork liver pâté, pickled vegetables, cucumber, toasted rye bread), which was delicious,
while nobody really liked the Schmaltz (chicken and pork fat, cracklin, pickled onion, rye bread) because of its unhealthy elements, but I liked the slight oiliness all the same.
The Reibekuchen (horseradish potato pancakes, rhubarb chutney, dill crème fraîche) wasn't too bad,
we each got a delicious scoop of the Warm Potato Salad (bacon, whole grain mustard),

while the Pierogi (haus-made ham & cheddar cheese dumplings, sweet pea relish, mint) was one of the better dumplings I have had to date.

As always, we got the Giant Wurst Platter (Kielbasa (smoked pork, garlic, coriander), Lemon Weisswurst (turkey, pork, parsley), Spicy Bierwurst (pork, paprika, cayenne), Currywurst (pork, veal, curry), Zungenblutwurst (blood, beef tongue, pork), Thüringer Bratwurst (veal, pork, egg),  potatoes, sauerkraut, haus mustard),

and thSpätzle (classic schwabian pasta, spring ramps, red onion marmalade, comté cheese) tasted fantastic as always.

The only slight disappointment was the Blutnudeln (trentino-style blood pasta, braised veal shank, blood orange, basil), which tasted a little bland, though mainly because it was made with blood.

After our meal, the restaurant brought out a little pie with a candle on top for my friend, who clearly had a fun night, although we had to call it a day soon after as we had more food truck stuff to do tomorrow.
