August 19th 2012: Biking on Nantucket

Today, I got up early to pick my friend up in Worcester, then drove all the way to the Hyannis Ferry Terminal at 220 Ocean Street in Barnstable to go biking with friends on the island town of Nantucket.

After getting our parking pass and getting my bike put on the ferry, we stood around talking to our other friends who were going biking on Nantucket as well.

Finally it was time to leave. While most of my friends had gotten first class tickets, my friend and  did not, so we could not enter the small room with comfy seats, although I felt the small difference wasn't worth the price. But then again, when the journey to the island is almost 2 hours long, mayhaps it might have been better. Anyway, pictures I took of the Lewis Bay area as we left it follow, including pictures of the Lewis Bay Lighthouse. We also passed by several jellyfish floating in the water, but my camera was not good enough to capture them.

After it became too windy to stay outside, I headed down to the lower deck to take a much needed rest. After what just seemed like a short moment, it was announced that we were approaching Nantucket.

There were many boats out sailing this very fine day, including 2 very old looking ships.

As we approached the harbor, we had several good views of the Brant Point Lighthouse and the Coast Guard Station Brant Point.

Before setting off on our bike trip, 2 of my friends had to rent bikes from the Nantucket Bicycle Shop on Straight Wharf, and then we decided to get chow from East Street Cantina, where I got the fish taco, which was just okay I guess, while my friend got the fried clams, which were good as always.

Finally, after everyone had finished eating, we headed out, taking the Sconset Bike Ride Trail, highlighted below in pink.

We took the Polpis Road way first, going the longer path to Siasconset Beach at the end of Gully Road. Pictures I took along the way follow.

At the the Siasconset area, we headed to the Sconset Market for some well deserved ice cream. I got the peach flavor, which was actually one of the best ice cream cones I have ever had. After dessert, most of my friends had to return along the Milestone Road route back because they had booked the 4 o'clock boat back, while the friend who had tagged along with me was going back at 8pm together with me, so we could stay longer at the beach. Pictures we took while here, including one of a live crab trying to burrow itself in the sand, follow.

Finally, we decided it was time to head back as my friend had to return her bike by 5, going along the Milestone Road route back.

After returning the bike, we decided that we still had time to visit the Nantucket Whaling Museum, so off we went, after I locked my bike to one of the lamp posts at the harbor area outside the bike shop. We had 15 minutes left to see the place, so we did.

After the museum closed, we had half an hour to spare before the restaurant we wanted to have dinner at, the Centre Street Bistro, opened, so we walked around for a bit.

Finally at our dinner place, which was pretty quaint and situated with other shops in a house, we decided to sit outside to enjoy the weather. Our starters had cajun spice sprinkled on the butter, which was an interesting touch. My friend got the shrimp and polenta ravioli, which was pretty good, while I got the risotto special, which came with shitake mushrooms, corn, asparagus, lobster meat, and topped with seared swordfish, and was simply excellent. As the dishes were not very filling, we topped it off with the Chocolate Marquis with coffee ice cream, which was chocolate mousse wrapped in pastry dough and baked. the dessert was pretty good, and went pretty well with the raspberries served on the side with it.

After dinner, we still had a lot of time before our ferry ride home, so we decided to walk around a bit more, passing by Children's Beach on Harbor View Way near Easton Street while on the way to the Brant Point Lighthouse.

The Brant Point Beach area was beautiful, especially in the light of the setting sun.

With that, we walked back to the harbor and took the ferry back to Barnstable, sleeping all the way back.
The drive back was equally uneventful, and I got home only after midnight.

I have another day off tomorrow, so more is to come. Stay tuned.
